DoGES in Official launch of Raja Trust Scholarships

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies initiated a Memorandum of Understanding between Shah Ranmal Raja Charitable Trust, Kenya and the University of Nairobi for twelve (12) annual scholarships to needy and bright students in geography and environmental studies. The official launch of the “Raja Trust Scholarships” took place on Tuesday 13th August, 2013 at the University of Nairobi.

2013 BA III DoGES field-class

Field-class is an annual event for all third year geography and environmental studies students. The 2013 BA III field-class took place in Nanyuki County and its environs between 9th July and 13th July, 2013. The theme of the field-class was “Harnessing natural resources for ecological integrity, sustainable livelihoods and food security in Laikipia County and its Environs”.

DoGES Don, Prof. E.M. Irandu, highlights the importance of “humanities and social sciences”

Prof. Evaristus Irandu of the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies gave a captivating, motivating and mentorship talk to students of Limuru Girls High School (popularly known as Chox). This was during the school’s “Humanities Week” held on Saturday 15th of June 2013. Prof. Irandu stressed that “Humanities and Social Sciences” is important in all aspects of our lives. Quoting several success stories and examples, Prof. Irandu encouraged the students who choose Humanities (Geography, History and CRE) to be proud of it and walk tall in the crowd.

DoGES postgrads, Michael and Belinda, share their experience as exchange students

Two more postgraduate students from the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies benefited from a one-semester exchange programme to the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. These are Michael Kaelo and Belinda Omungu (middle two in photo). According to Michael and Belinda, “the North-South-South exchange programme was an eye opener and a priceless experience for us.

United Nations Senior Human Rights Advisor, Uchenna Emelonye, Delivers a Guest Lecture at PRS

Mr. Uchenna Emelonye, Senior Human Rights Advisor based at the United Nations Headquarters, Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya, delivered a Guest lecture to over  fifty Master of Arts Degree in Human Rights students, lectures and invited guests, Friday 28th June, 2013.  The topic of the lecture is   “Adopting A Human Rights Based Approach to Kenya Development Plan”.
