June 29, 2024, was a warm summer day in Lenakakya Ivuuni village in Kitui East constituency, the home village of Dr. Patrick Maluki, the esteemed Chairman of the Department of Diplomacy and International Studies at the University of Nairobi. The quiet rural setting was abuzz with activity as the community gathered for a community outreach focused on launching a new water borehole project for the school and the surrounding community.

In his keynote address, the chief guest, Mr. Francis Atwoli, President Organization of Africa Trade Unions Unity (OATUU), Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K), General Secretary of Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union (KPAWU), lauded  Dr. Maluki for his commitment to improving educational and humanitarian conditions in the region. “Access to water is a basic human right and initiatives such as these are crucial to empowering communities and supporting the next generation,” said Mr. Atwoli.

Further, Mr. Atwoli outlined his vision for sustainable development across Kenya, emphasizing the role of grassroots efforts and community partnerships.

The Department of Diplomacy and International Studies students also took the opportunity to lead tree-planting efforts, demonstrating their commitment to environmental conservation.

The Department of Diplomacy and International Studies is grateful to all who took the opportunity to participate in the community outreach to Ivuuni Village.
