Welcome to the 2nd IDIS Webinar on the theme of Energy Integration for Post- Covid19 Economic Recovery and Sustainable Development in Africa.

Energy, both as an economic and social input and output, is central to the attainment of Africa’s sustainable development as demanded by the UN Sustainable Development Goal seven (7). Africa has tremendous energy potential, but despite that, more than 600 million Africans do not have access to electricity.

The Corona pandemic that has since 2020 been ravaging the world, has compounded Africa’s economic recovery and sustainable development. Given Africa’s weak political, economic and social structures, the post-Covid 19 impact on the Continent is likely to be more devastating than in other regions. It is estimated that, ‘After’ the pandemic, 23 million more Africans will fall below the poverty line, and the number of people living on “food aid” will nearly double.

There is now urgent need for a regional energy integration strategy/ approach to serve as an essential enabler for the overall development of the energy sector that would in turn contribute to ensuring energy security for sustained economic and social development in Africa.

African leaders and stakeholders, drawn from various political, social and economic sectors, need to reflect on how best to implement a regional energy integrated strategy, in a manner that can effectively contribute and energise the Continent’s economic recovery programs and attainment of sustainable development.

It is with this in mind that the Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies has sponsored this Webinar that brings relevant stakeholders and area experts, drawn from the Academy, the UN and international organizations, the Private sector etc, to come together to discuss; provide strategic direction and propose actionable points, on how best Africa could harness its huge energy resource, for post-COVID-19 economic recovery.
