The Institute admitted a total of 108 students (92 for Bachelor of Arts and 16 for Diploma) in May 2013. The students were originally meant to report in September 2013 but had to come in May as part of government efforts in clearing the two year back log of high school graduates who had qualified for university admission. The students had their orientation from 27th to 31st May 2013 and started classes on 3rd June 2013. The Director and other members of staff welcomed the students at a function that was held on Tuesday May 28, 2013 at K1 next to the University swimming pool.
The postgraduate students will still report in September as has been the practice.

The function took place on 3rd and 4th June 2013 at the Central Catering Unit (CCU) next to the Chancellor's Court and was graced by the presence of the Indian High Commissioner to Kenya. The exercise is meant to sensitize the postgraduate students on what will be expected of them in the broad area of diplomacy once they have graduated. For the first time ever, a similar function has been organized for the Diploma students and it will take place on 24th June 2013 at the IDIS Conference Room.
