CAUSE AND IMPACTS OF FOOD SHORTAGE IN KITUI COUNTY

Food insecurity has been a great challenge in the world in general. Its causes have been known and regional organizations have established measures to ensure this problem has been stopped.

Food shortage by definition is a situation in which food is needed and cannot be obtained in sufficient amounts. This research examines the environmental factors which very often results to food shortages and food insecurity in Kitui County, including the impact and the measures to ensure food security within the county. Key objectives of the study are to identify issues affecting food production within the county; examine the impacts of food shortage in Kitui County and to assess measures that have been put in place to improve food supply and food security in the region. This study strives to examine the questions; what are the major environmental factors that have led to food insecurity in Kitui County? What are the steps farmers use to overcome such issues? What are the main impacts of food insecurity in Kitui County? And if there are any appropriate measures that have been undertaken to tackle the issues of food shortages and resultant food insecurity.

The study finds out that food shortages and food insecurity in Kitui County has led by due to the factors including: desertification, climate change, and deforestation, excessive use of fertilizers, poor soils, crop failure and pollution.
