ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION AND NATURAL RESOURCE BASED CONFLICTS IN EASTERN AFRICA: A CASE STUDY OF THE LAPSSET PROJECT IN KENYA

The research study has brought the concept of natural resource based conflicts and environment through an inter relation in security. Lapsset corridor project is the hope of development that will change the face of Eastern Africa countries. The objectives of the research include: causes and impacts of environmental degradation in Eastern Africa, to determine how environmental degradation leads to natural resource based conflicts in Eastern Africa and especially in the case of Kenya Lapsset corridor project and finally the best strategies in resolving natural resource based conflicts and preventing environmental degradation in Kenya. This study has applied the Homer Dixon theory and greed vs grievance to provide knowledge of both environment and natural resources. The findings of the research include: destruction of environment through deforestation, community based conflict over natural resources and lack of representation of the indigenous people. The research methodology used was interviewing senior government officials in region that involves Lapsset and government documents for the purpose of acquiring information.
